Tarantina releases her new single ‘Rainbow’ on March 20th. Dark and foreboding with a trip hop vibe, ‘Rainbow’ was produced by Raf Riley (Skepta, Stormzy, Diplo, Labrinth, Emeli Sandé) and Tarantina and features quite literally everything but the kitchen sink.

Speaking about ‘Rainbow’, Tarantina explains, “Raf Riley and I produced Rainbow in my flat in Camden. We played things like pots, pans, broken jewellery and a wind chime as instruments. Once we’d recorded these sounds, we played them out through the speakers of my old TV and then recorded that. The moment the track really came to life though was when we added the synth bass at the studio.”

‘Rainbow’ is the follow up to Tarantina’s singles ‘Fables’ and ‘1/9’ which were released late last year and her debut track ‘I Am A Loner’ which hit the Hype Machine chart top #5 in recent weeks and has now racked up over 100K streams on soundcloud. All four tracks will feature on the self-taught singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and videographer Tarantina’s forthcoming ‘Teething’ EP, which will be released on April 27th.

Previous EP tracks have drawn praise from online tastemakers including The Line of Best Fit (Song of the Day – Fables), Pigeons & Planes, CLASH, Hilly Dilly, Spindle Magazine, Indie London (Song of the Week – Fables), Earmilk and more. The latter referred to her as “a musical Tim Burton”.

Tarantina creates dark polished pop within the confines of her home studio. ‘I Am A Loner’ was her first ever released track, which she anonymously uploaded to Soundcloud under her previous moniker Wray and unexpectedly took on a life of it’s own and picked up by major blog support including Pigeons & Planes who called it “…a brilliant piece of soulful pop songwriting, worthy of so many repeat listens”. This accidental success sparked an intense period of hibernation, the result of which is her forthcoming EP ‘Teething’.

Tarantina blends fine art processes and pop culture with a DIY aesthetic to make accompanying videos akin to moving pieces of audiovisual art. Raised between two juxtaposing worlds, her mother’s house filled with Portishead and Leftfield (who she’s been touring the world with over the past year as their lead vocalist), and the home of her father with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, Tarantina is a product of these opposing influences with a staunchly avant-garde twist.

Praise for Tarantina:

“Dark pop odyssey” – The Line of Best Fit – Song of the Day 31/10 (Fables)

“(Fables)… is stretched between the worlds of trip-hop and avant-garde electronica, with chasms of bass and wild, windswept vocals slowly being suffocated by shadowy synths. Tarantina’s visuals provide an eerie accompaniment to the track – Picasso-esque portraits, masked mannequins, creepy collages, and demonic paint vines all boost the innate darkness found in “Fables”.” – The Line of Best Fit – Song of the Day 31/10 (Fables)

“Self-taught singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and videographer Tarantina releases her striking new single, Fables, and impresses. A dark offering that’s built around dusky, Sia like vocals, atmospheric beats and electronics and a sombre central piano chord, this nevertheless captures your attention and refuses to let it shift. The lyrics are shot through with the pain of a failed relationship and a warning to avoid the same kind of trap, with the sense of anguish, regret and determination to learn growing as the song reaches its near operatic conclusion.” – Indie London – Songs of the Week – 4/5 (Fables)

“Stark pop noir with a personal streak, her songwriting carries a redemptive edge while staring into darkness. New song ‘1/9’ flips heartache around, seeking out fresh paths as a relationship ends. The muscular production has a metallic edge, while Tarantina’s vocal surges up towards the light after billowing down into the depths.” – CLASH (1/9)
“A musical Tim Burton” Earmilk (1/9)
“Right from the start, you pick up on a haunting vibe, and, furthermore, the pitch-bending synth bass you hear for the majority of the song is prominent and unconventional, adding a unique element to the track. The main highlight is her stellar vocal” – Hilly Dilly (1/9)

“Warped and weary, ‘1/9’ is the third noir electronic-pop creation from mysterious newcomer Tarantina. Throughout the track, the atmosphere hangs heavy with unhurried percussion and creeping electronics that set the intimate scene for Tarantina’s rich, soulful vocal.” – The Most Radicalist (1/9)

“…a brilliant piece of soulful pop songwriting, worthy of so many repeat listens” – Pigeons & Planes (I Am A Loner)

“…her vocals are commanding, her tone is angelic and it’s utterly spine-tingling when she hits her high notes” – Hilly Dilly (I Am A Loner)
