Today, Norway’s hottest export DAGNY unveils the video for her debut single ‘Backbeat’.
It premiered over on NYLON, and you can also check it out on Popjustice, Stereogum, Digital Spy, The 405, Idolator, and below.
DAGNY is an artist and songwriter from Tromsø, Norway. In many ways, her music reflects her personality – a quirky folk/pop sound infused with a huge dose of youthful optimism. Directed by Malia James, the new video for ‘Backbeat’ is an energetic and enthralling clip reflective of the track’s energy. She delivers an explosive and engaging performance in between the striking cinematic visuals. It’s the perfect complement to the rising hit.
It’s been a rather exciting few months for DAGNY.
Selling out her debut London headline show at The Old Queens Head towards the end of 2014 – based purely on word of mouth, DAGNY returned to the stage towards the end of last year, delivering a fiery performance to a packed out Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen crowd in London.
Since then, DAGNY’s debut single ‘Backbeat’ has quickly become a bonafide phenomenon. Originally premiered by Zane Loweon Beats 1, it’s now racked up over 16 million Spotify streams to date. As a result of the track’s explosion, DAGNY has been placed on “Artist to Watch” lists from Apple, Spotify, and Tidal in addition to receiving praise from The 405, NME, Disco Naivete, The Line of Best Fit and many others. The wave of excitement has also spilled into her live performances, having already impressed at Great Escape Festival, Norway’s by:Larm festival, and SPOT Festival in Denmark. DAGNY is now in the process of working on her debut EP in Los Angeles, set for release in July.
For those who may have missed DAGNY’s debut single ‘Backbeat’ when it dropped towards the end of 2015 – it speaks volumes for what she is all about. Immensely catchy folk-inflected pop choruses, driving piano lines, all carried by her timeless, and effortlessly captivating vocals.
“Think fast, don’t let the speed of sound leave you feeling paralysed / Slow down, cause your words are saying something different from your eyes” DAGNY sings in ‘Backbeat’‘s verse – perhaps a reference to how quickly things can change – whether those things be relationships, friendships, or perhaps things moving forward in one’s own career. For DAGNY, she’s beginning to experience the latter, first hand.
Next up, DAGNY is headlining Club NME at London’s KOKO on July 15th with special guests 96OneDream and Radio One’s Phil Taggart (DJ set).
