Self-taught singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and videographer Tarantina releases her debut EP ‘Teething’ on May 10th. Featuring her four previously released singles; ‘I Am A Loner’, ‘1/9’, ‘Fables’ and ‘Rainbow’ and brand new track ‘Reeling’, a track inspired by Philip Larkin’s ‘This Be the Verse’.

“They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.”

Speaking about the ‘Teething EP’, Tarantina says “Change hurts more when you’re fully grown. These songs are my milk teeth, my first steps, my best friends and my worst enemies. I know more about their insides than I do of my own body. So here they are, 5 tracks straight from my heart to your plate.”

Tarantina creates dark polished pop within the confines of her home studio. ‘I Am A Loner’ was her first ever released track, which she anonymously uploaded to Soundcloud under her previous moniker Wray and unexpectedly took on a life of it’s own and picked up by major blog support including Pigeons & Planes who called it “…a brilliant piece of soulful pop songwriting, worthy of so many repeat listens”. This accidental success sparked an intense period of hibernation, the result of which is the ‘Teething EP’.

Tarantina blends fine art processes and pop culture with a DIY aesthetic to make accompanying videos akin to moving pieces of audiovisual art. Raised between two juxtaposing worlds, her mother’s house filled with Portishead and Leftfield (who she’s been touring the world with over the past year as their lead vocalist), and the home of her father with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, Tarantina is a product of these opposing influences with a staunchly avant-garde twist.

Her most recent single ‘Rainbow’ was produced by Raf Riley (Skepta, Stormzy, Diplo, Labrinth, Emeli Sandé) and Tarantina and features quite literally everything but the kitchen sink. It follows on from singles ‘Fables’ and ‘1/9’ which were released late last year and her debut track ‘I Am A Loner’ which hit the Hype Machine chart top #5 in recent weeks and has now racked up over 100K streams on soundcloud.

Previous EP tracks have drawn praise from online tastemakers including The Line of Best Fit (Song of the Day – Fables), Pigeons & Planes, The 405, CLASH, Hilly Dilly, Spindle Magazine, Indie London (Song of the Week – Fables), Earmilk and more. The latter referred to her as “a musical Tim Burton”.

To coincide with the EP release she also reveals the striking self-made visual to accompany ‘Rainbow’ – Speaking about it Tarantina explains “The video for Rainbow was created using raw chicken, rice, cabbage, milk, syringes, latex and a fish tank. The visuals reflect a relationship in decay.”
