This, the follow-up to their 2011 breakthrough album, ‘You & I’, was preceded by the mesmeric releases ‘Kings’, the title track single ‘Creation’, and the stirring ‘Believe In Me’ EP. The Alabama-born siblings now reside in California and the relocation can be heard on their radiant new record. “Being there must have affected our sound. Living in California feels like being on vacation the whole time,” says Allison.
‘Creation’ marks a stunning sonic evolution for the duo. From the opening title track, the thirteen songs retain the breezy, melodious charm of their previous work whilst injecting a world-wise, sun-drenched sparkle. Tracks such as ‘Kings’ and ‘The Devil Is A Lonely Night’ match taut grooves to soaring harmonies and there’s a life-affirming glow to the lolloping stomps of ‘Creation’, ‘Believe In Me’ and ‘Honest Man’. Elsewhere, folk-pop ballads such as ‘The One I Want’ and ‘Flesh And Bone’ blend Laurel Canyon sing-alongs with melancholic reflections. The Pierces sound at the peak of their powers.
It’s a natural step on from ‘You & I’. That 2011 album made the sisters stars. They had released three albums by that point, honing their folk-tinged indie-pop with each. Their fourth lifted them to a new level of success. Featuring huge radio hits such as ‘You’ll Be Mine’, ‘Glorious’ and ‘It Will Not Be Forgotten’, it entered the UK charts at number four, the beginning of a long stay in the top 20. They followed it up with extensive touring and acclaimed appearances at numerous festivals.
As their touring schedule wound down, they found themselves living on opposite sides of the globe: Allison splitting her time between London and New York and Catherine in Los Angeles. When Allison joined her, they turned their sights to the new record. Determined to enter bold new territory, they enlisted a shaman who guided them on a spiritual journey in which they took ayahuasca, the hallucinogenic brew that allows its drinker to peer behind the curtain of their soul. “We wanted to find out more about ourselves, and we went to extreme experiences to do that,” explains Catherine. “Ayahuasca shows you the depths of your being.”
It sparked a prolific creative period for Allison and Catherine in which many of the songs that make up ‘Creation’ were written. The album was produced by Christian ‘Leggy’ Langdon, the group’s on-tour musical director. As the title suggests, it marks a new dawn for The Pierces. A self-awakening has brought about their most brilliant work yet.
The Pierces have announced details of a full UK headline tour in September in support of their new album ‘Creation’ which is released on September 1st. Starting in Edinburgh, the tour takes in 10 cities and includes a show at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on September 23rd. The new UK tour follows three sold out intimate UK shows in June that saw the sisters praised with critical acclaim of their ‘magical, sinuously intertwined voices’ (The Guardian). Tour dates below.
