Today, Hertfordshire’s Petrie shares his impeccable debut single ‘Your Side’. It premiered over on Crack In the Road and can also be streamed below.
With a sound that breaks down walls of convention, Petrie is a name you could well be hearing a lot about over the coming months.
Distinctly British, and seemingly intent on pushing songwriting boundaries to their limits – Petrie is something of a prodigal talent. Writing, producing and performing on this debut single, his sound comes fully formed right from the word go.
There’s a definite off-kilter RnB/pop feel to it, a touch of Ben Khan-esque weird pop in its songwriting nuances, and slightly reminiscent of Everything Everything in his vocal execution, too.
According to Petrie: “‘Your Side’ deals with the delusions of someone who is in a toxic relationship. The song’s closing lines talk of a new beginning without complete reliance on one another, but the line “our limbs unstuck” implies uncertainty about the future of their love.”
It appears that the narrator within the song is comforting his partner, attempting to salvage their love by making empty promises, whilst acknowledging the false sense of security that the physical side of their relationship brings.
Delivering every line with an infectious sincerity, Petrie’s vocal tone is warm and welcoming, executed with laser-like precision, backed by some glitchy, chaotic electronic melodic touches, and a wonderfully adventurous rhythm section.
Petrie is set to follow up ‘Your Side’ with a number of other releases throughout the year ahead. One to keep a keen eye on for sure.
