London-based five piece Sloes return, with their superb new single ‘Young’.

It premiered over on The Music Ninja a moment ago, and can be streamed below.

Playing a delightfully inventive brand of indie, infusing delicate string passages with dark, brooding songwriting. There’s something a little different about this band.

“‘Young’ is a song about adolescence,” explain the band…“rebellion at its purest; lying to your parents, missing phone calls, subterfuge and all for the party you can’t wait to go to. It’s about dancing all night till you feet hurt and your clothes are drenched through. There’s a time when we make our own rules, testing the waters just because we can. It reflects experimentation, the feeling of invincibility and laments a time when clubs were thriving rather than dying out and bright minds were full of more questions than answers.”

It’s a wonderfully relatable lyrical angle; a song about growing up – with a gorgeous, spirited instrumental backdrop. Frontman Jerome’s subtle, yet charming vocals glide across the string-laced indie-folk, with violinist Katie providing luxurious harmonies throughout.

“I say change the rules, listen to the schools which say that you are getting nowhere. You, are you scared to go, admitting what you know, it only grows the more you oppose” – Jerome cries in the second verse. ‘Young’ is an honest tale about making mistakes, growing up, and rebelling, and overall, it’s a supremely impressive return from the young band.

Sloes’ debut EP ‘Chasing Tails’ – released towards the tail-end of 2015 was an ambitious, uplifting introduction, gaining plaudits from the likes of Wonderland Magazine, Hunger, and CLASH Magazine.

The band was formed originally when Jerome and Jo started writing together whilst travelling through Colombia – a trip that no doubt added further inspiration to their writing, offering a wider view on genre development and combinations. Paul and Luke came on board shortly after, followed by Katie – Jo’s little sister, providing violin, and thus bridging the gap between their eclectic songwriting inspirations.

A basement in Dalston became home to their early development. Fusing together elements of indie, pop and folk with soaring vocal melodies, ambient guitar lines and rousing hooks. Sloes take the best of their eclectic influences to create one intriguing sound.
